Heidi and Scott's Rustic Backyard DIY Wedding We held our wedding at our home, with a few dozen close family and friends in attendance. The ceremony was in the backyard and a close friend officiated the ceremony. We had a dinner reception inside the house, followed by several boisterous rounds of Cranium (with teams of Boys Vs. Girls of course!).
Our goal was to do as much of the wedding ourselves as possible. Heidi made her gown and reception dress, as well as dresses for two of her friends. Scott laid a new tile floor throughout the house in preparation for the wedding, as well as making the invitations from scratch and being generally the most useful groom in the history of wedding planning. Instead of having a traditional wedding party with bridesmaids and groomsmen, we asked our parents to participate in the ceremony. Heidi's mother sang a beautiful rendition of "My Luve is Like A Red, Red Rose" (a traditional Scottish love song set to music by Robert Burns). Scott's mother was the matron of honor, holding Heidi's bouquet and helping the ring-bearer with his duties. (Heidi's son Tyrion was the ring-bearer.) Scott's father read a passage from Madeline L'Engle, and Heidi's father read a passage from Kahlil Gibran. We also wrote our own vows, basing them on the lyrics to "Lovesong" by The Cure. We did hire outside help for the food, flowers and photography. However, Heidi and her friends made the wedding cake, basing it on a recipe from Hello, Cupcake. The groom before the wedding, waiting for the bride (who's late as usual). The groom with his brother. Getting ready beforehand... it turns out that 6 hours is not enough time for 7 girls to prepare for a formal event. The girls were all late to the wedding. But luckily, a wedding can't start with out the bride! Here comes the bride...
This picture is particularly poignant since everyone (including the officiant) is teary-eyed. In fact the only person not crying is the ring bearer. Go figure.
Still having trouble keeping it together; most emotional bride ever.
Photographers hard at work! (Brandyn on the left, Manny on the right). Some of the groom's college friends...
The cake, made by the bride and her friends. The cake toppers are miniature hallmark ornamnets which have now been added to the Christmas decorations box and will come out to live on the Christmas tree every year.
The ringbearer and his friends got into the costumes and decided to be princesses. Next time someone tells you that nothing can upstage the bride at her own reception... tell this story. It was HILARIOUS. The "reception" dress; also made by Heidi. Playing Cranium after the bulk of the wedding guests had gone home. The boys' team... The girls' team... The bride and her sister...
